Top-seed Tomas Berdych began his bid for glory at the Stockholm Open with a 7-5 6-3 victory over Germany's Dustin Brown in the second round.
The Czech, fresh off final appearances in both Beijing and Shanghai recently, saved all three break points he faced on his own serve as he came through in straight sets after one hour and 23 minutes on court.
Next up for the 2012 champion in Sweden will be Marius Copil of Romania, who beat fellow qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert of France 6-4 6-3.
Berdych will be looking to pick up crucial ranking points this week as he bids to qualify for the World Tour Finals - he must reach the final to add to his current points tally for the season.
"It's important for me to focus on myself, play good tennis and hit a clean ball," he told the ATP Tour's official website. "I want to have [my qualification] in my hands and decide it for myself."
