With Czech Republic firmly in the driving seat, hosts Romania must win today’s doubles to retain its place in the elite World Group. In Friday’s singles rubbers Radek Stepanek defeated Adrian Ungur 63 62 60 before Tomas Berdych overcame Victor Crivoi 63 63 76(4) to give Czech Republic the perfect start to its play-off campaign.
In today’s match Marius Copil will play in his first live Davis Cup rubber alongside doubles specialist Horia Tecau, and they will take on the imposing partnership of Berdych and Stepanek. The Czech pair have only lost one Davis Cup doubles match in eight played. Berdych and Stepanek were substituted for Jan Hajek and Lukas Rosol on Saturday morning.
It is the fifth meeting between these two nations with Czech Republic holding a 3-1 advantage. The last encounter came in 2001 when Czech Republic overcame a Romanian team fielding current captain Andrei Pavel.
Both find themselves in the play-offs after losing their first round ties this year. Czech Republic fell to semifinalist Argentina 4-1, while Czech Republic lost a tight tussle with Kazahkstan 3-2.
