Posted on October 20, 2010 at 6:46 PM
Tomas enjoyed a first-round bye. He eyes one of four remaining Barclays ATP World Tour Finals berths and will open his Swedish campaign against Jarkko Nieminen.

Finland's Jarkko Nieminen, a two-time Stockholm finalist, prevailed against German Michael Berrer 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in one hour and 57 minutes. The 29-year-old Nieminen is making his 11th straight appearance at the If Stockholm Open and has reached the quarter-finals or better the past four years.

(3) Tomas Berdych (CZE) vs Jarkko Nieminen (FIN) - Fifth Meeting

No. 3 seed Tomas Berdych and Jarkko Nieminen are battling for a quarter-final berth. Berdych has a big upper hand on paper, winning all four of their previous meetings in straight sets - including one earlier this year in San Jose. Their records on the ATP World Tour since the US Open might go against that though, Nieminen going 9-2 (including one win here) and Berdych is 2-3.

Berdych Opens Stockholm Campaign

Wimbledon runner-up Tomas Berdych will be awaited by many fans as he makes his 2010 début at the If Stockholm Open.

The Czech will meet Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen, who struggled to beat Michael Berrer on Monday night. Berdych has never lost to Nieminen in five previous meetings, but the Czech’s confidence has been better than in the last few months where he has struggled to find the inspiration which led him to the Wimbledon final. And Nieminen knows that.

Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen continued his solid run of form, posting his 10th win since the US Open (10-2) as he cruised past third-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych 6-1, 6-4 in second-round action Wednesday at the If Stockholm Open.

Nieminen, who had been unable to take a set off of World No. 6 Berdych in their previous four meetings, converted on three of his seven break point opportunities to clinch the victory in one hour and 26 minutes.

Tomas: "I did not feel well in the match and it took me a long time before I got into the game. Next time it will be better."
