BERDYCH SUFFERS BLOW
by ATP Staff | 04.10.2010
Fifth seed Tomas Berdych suffered a blow in his attempts to add valuable South African Airways 2010 ATP Rankings points this week in Beijing on his China Open debut.
German qualifier and World No. 51 Michael Berrer recorded his second win in 14 matches against Top 10 opponents with a gutsy 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 comeback victory in two hours and 21 minutes. Berrer, runner-up to Marin Cilic at the PBZ Zagreb Indoors in February, withstood 10 aces from Berdych’s racquet for his 17th win of the year.
Berdych is currently No. 6 in the year-to-date South African Airways 2010 ATP Rankings, 440 points behind No. 5-ranked Robin Soderling in the battle to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals at London in November. Czech Berdych dropped to a 42-20 season record.

Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic returns against Michael Berrer of Germany during their first round men's singles match at the China Open tennis tournament at the National Tennis Center in Beijing on October 4, 2010. Berrer won 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Berdych quickly knocked out at China Open
The Olympic Green Tennis Centre in Beijing turned into a graveyard of seeds on Monday, with Fernando Verdasco, Tomas Berdych and Jelena Jankovic leading a parade of stars out of the China Open.
Berdych — ranked seventh in the world and a Wimbledon finalist this year — fell to left-handed German qualifier Michael Berrer in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
The 25-year-old Berdych, the fifth seed, looked sluggish throughout the match and Berrer took advantage, pounding 25 winners past the Czech.
Berdych mounted a last-ditch comeback in the deciding set but, serving at 4-5 to stay alive, he failed to hold, slamming his racket down to the court in frustration after sending the ball into the net on match point.
