Match Report

Marcos Baghdatis defeated the seventh seeded Tomas Berdych 7-5, 6-4 in the third round of the ATP World Tour Masters in Cincinnati.

The Cypriot number one started the match in a very aggressive fashion and Berdych was forced to save five break points in the third game of the opener. Despite being denied a break of serve

Baghdatis kept striking the ball well, maintaining his high level to keep the pressure on Berdych and he eventually earned the breakthrough in the eleventh game to take a 6-5 lead as Berdych sprayed a forehand wide. Baghdatis then tried to close down the set in the following game but was forced to save three break points before converting his fifth set point as the Czech miscued another forehand.

Tomas Berdych received treatment on his right knee before the second set started but that did not help him respond well to Baghdatis’ great plays.

On his third break point chance in the third game Baghdatis broke through after a deep return on to the baseline that forced another forehand error from Berdych. He was then denied on two match points in the ninth game, but strong serving from Baghdatis helped him to close out victory in just over two hours in very warm conditions at the Grandstand in Cincinnati.
