Posted on August 5, 2010 at 6:10 AM

Tomas will now play 16th seed Andrey Golubev for a place in the quarter-finals.

Berdych will look to reach his ninth quarter-final of the season when he next faces No. 16 seed Andrey Golubev, who advanced with a 6-2, 7-6(7) win over Belgian Kristof Vliegen.

Berdych defeated the Kazakhstani in straight sets in the first round of Wimbledon.

Golubev, 23, made an impressive run last month at the ATP World Tour 500 clay-court event in Hamburg, defeating World No. 6 Nikolay Davydenko en route to the title. Afterwards, he moved up 45 spots to a career-high No. 37 in the South African Airways 2010 ATP Rankings.

Berdych battles into ATP tennis quarter-finals

By Jim Slater (AFP)

WASHINGTON — Czech top seed Tomas Berdych, coming off a runner-up effort at Wimbledon, advanced Thursday to the ATP Washington Classic quarter-finals by outlasting Kazakhstan's Andrey Golubev 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 after heavy rain delayed the start by more than four hours.

Berdych, who eliminated Roger Federer at Wimbledon and Andy Murray at Roland Garros on his way to the French Open semi-finals, ousted Golubev just as he had in the opening round at Wimbledon, but in a much tougher fight.

"I'm not playing my best tennis yet," Berdych said. "If I play my best tennis here, what can I bring the next couple weeks?

"Everything I'm trying to do is get 100 percent ready for the US Open - get rhythm back, win a couple matches and hit full throttle in New York."

about Andrey Golubev:

"He has really improved in a few weeks," Berdych said. "He's starting to play well and hardcourt is his best surface."
