Hard for Germans to Czech visitors' consistency

By DavisCup.com's Leigh Walsh in Hannover

The Germans have a full strength team in Hannover but it will take something special to stop Czech Republic, led by world No. 7 Tomas Berdych. The visitors can be summed up in one word: consistent. This is the Czechs' 35th World Group appearance, the most of any nation along with USA. They have won 12 of their last 14 ties and emerged as champions twice in the past four years. Their captain has been at the helm for 10 full seasons and their team for this tie has played a combined 140 rubbers between them. Simply put, they ooze experience.

The New Town Hall (German: Neues Rathaus) or New City Hall in Hanover, Germany, is a city hall and was opened on July 20, 1913, after having been under construction for 12 years. It is a magnificent, castle-like building of the era of Wilhelm II in eclectic style at the southern edge of the inner city (outside of the historic city centre of Hanover). The building is embedded in the 10 hectare Maschpark. The Old Town Hall is no longer used as the main seat of administration, but houses businesses and the registry office.

TOMAS BERDYCH: “It’s going to be a very difficult one. Even if he is playing his first match in the Davis Cup, he is the [type of] player to be strong enough to handle that. I am expecting a very tough battle.”

Philipp Kohlschreiber, leader of German DC team

Speaking of experience, Kohlschreiber enters his ninth season of Davis Cup and will lead Germany’s bid to reach the quarterfinal for the second time in three years. He holds a 4-1 head-to-head record over Rosol and will be eager to extend that when he steps out at TUI Arena.

“I know him quite well,” Kohlschreiber said of his Czech opponent. “We practice together and play the same tournaments. He likes to play indoors with steady conditions and he is very aggressive, overall he is a very good player. Hopefully I can manage to play a very good game.”

Berdych returns to the team competition for the first time since Czech Republic’s semifinal loss to France at Roland Garros in 2014. With a 48-16 overall record in Davis Cup, he has the chance to bring up a half century of victories this weekend. But do the numbers matter to him?

“In the past I never actually thought about it,” he said. “But now with more and more years counting in my career there will probably be more of those questions. I think it’s really nice when you have those positive numbers to look at and I try to fight for that but in the end it’s only a number on the paper. If I keep playing well, all will come together. That’s the approach.”
