Damir Dzumhur was born on 20 May 1992 in Sarajevo, as a first child to father Nerfid and mother Zaneta.
His birth came shortly after the outbreak of the Bosnian War, in a maternity hospital located near the Zetra Olympic Hall. The arena was destroyed at the time, but it was the same place where Damir would start practicing tennis.
He also has a five years younger brother, Zlatan.
As a kid Dzumhur practiced skiing and football, in addition to tennis.
Growing up, he admired Patrick Rafter and Roger Federer the most, and he is also a keen football fan and supports the Bosnian team FK Zeljeznicar.
In addition to his native Bosnian, he speaks English.
He studies political science at the Faculty of Political Science in Sarajevo, at the University of Sarajevo.
In his childhood he also acted in two movies – Grbavica (2006), as background actor, and Mörderischer Frieden (2007), where he played major role as Durcan.
