Roger Federer (SUI) vs Tomas Berdych (CZE)
Roger Federer takes an 8-2 advantage into his quarter-final against Tomas Berdych, although the top seed did lose at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami in March.
Should Federer equal William Renshaw and Pete Sampras’ record of seven Wimbledon titles, the Swiss would not regain No. 1 in the South African Airways 2010 ATP Rankings. Federer, who dropped three sets in his opening two matches, will be looking to become the second man (after Patrick Rafter at the 1998 US Open) to win a major title having won his first round match from two-sets-to-love down. Contesting his 25th successive major quarter-final, only Jimmy Connors with 27 straight has played more than Federer.
Berdych, also a quarter-finalist in 2007 (l. to Nadal), reached his first Grand Slam semi-final at Roland Garros earlier this month (l. to Nadal). He has never lost a five-set match at Wimbledon (4-0 overall) and is attempting to become the first Czech man to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals since Ivan Lendl in 1990. The winner will play either Novak Djokovic (SRB) or Yen-Hsun Lu (TPE)

13:06: Warming to the task
Here they are – Federer and Berdych on Centre
13:10: Who’s in the chair?
Mohamed Layahni for Fed – Berd
13:22: 2-1 to both
Berdych, the underdog here, has held comfortably which will give him confidence. Berdych is obviously a big name but it’s still a big match on a big court
13:36: Berdych breaks!
T-Berd raced into a 0-30 lead but Rog hauled it back with some kicking services, including a second’un right on the line. He then netted to hand T-Berd a BP and the lofty Czech took it, pounded Rog’s backhand cross-court and making the No.1 seed slice long. 4-3, and T-Berd has broken in the psychologically crucial seventh game.
13:46: First set Berdych!
6-4, big services – two unreturnable ones to finish off with, in fact – and T-Berd has flown into a one-set lead! He treats himself to a new shirt to mark the occasion
13:55: Rog bounces back!
A hold and then a break to 15. TBerd came into the net and Rog passed him to perfection with a whippy backhand! 2-0.
13:58: 3-0 Fed
Comfortable hold and all of a sudden, the defending champion is moving TBerd around at will.
14:12: 5-2 Fed
Roger's services are corner-seeking missiles and he’s giving his Czech opponent the run-around good and proper. Almost everything is going onto T-Berd’s backhand as Rog holds to love.
14:20: Berdych holds
It took him a saved break and set point but TBerd has held to make it 3-5. Can Rog now serve out and level matters at 1-1? You’d expect him to...
Berdych holds to love at a canter and all of a sudden, he is 3-0 up. And a mere nine games from paradise and his second consecutive Grand Slam semi. This would also be Federer’s second straight QF ouster, after making the semis or better at 23 consecutive majors (a record that will likely never be bettered).
14:43: Berdych holds 4-1
Mr Lucie Safarova, as I like to call him, is still a break to the good. Rog pushed him to deuce but could get no further.
14:48: Double break!
Berdych drops, paints the corners and breaks Rog via deuce. 5-1! He’s about to serve for a two sets to one lead.
Berdych has just 6-1d Rog! 5 aces from the big fellah. Federer’s service meanwhile was poor: 61% in, 55% of points won on first service, 43% won on second. He’s a mere set away from his second consecutive quarter-final defeat…
14:58: Fed and Berdych hold to open fourth
It went via deuce, but TBerd has just made it 1-1 in the fourth. From the deuce court, Federer can do absolutely nothing about Berdych’s service – it sends him waaaay wide into the corner and leaves the entire court open.
15:10: 2-2 on Centre
2-1 up in sets, 2-2 in games. A bit of a struggle, but Berdych held. He’s four games from paradise...
15:14: Federer saves a break point
He’s in trouble here, Rog. 2-2, Ad TBerd, but the No.1 seed serves big and then goes on to hold. 3-2.
15:29: Berdy breaks!
Berdych breaks in the psychologically crucial seventh game! At Ad Berd, Roger serves big, sends it into the backhand corner, comes in and is royally backhand passed, low over the net. 4-3, and TBerd merely needs to serve twice to eliminate the reigning champ.
15:38: Deuce on Centre
Two great services, two unforced errors. Deuce on Centre Court as Feder-sweats. Ooh, he holds. Mrs Mirka Federer looks on nervously. That’ll teach her to wear a “Roger” sweatband – she’s jinxed him.
15:43: Match point saved!
Federer dominates after a second service and saves match point! Deuce!
15:44: Second match point!
Rog nets effetely on Ad then longs on deuce. He tries Hawk-Eye but to no avail. Second match point!
15:45: FEDEROUT! Thunder-Berds are go!
Feder-routed! Berdych serves big down the middle and follows up. And wins. In four sets. Wow. Federer is out. I repeat, Federer is out.
15:53: Federer to fall to No.3 in the world!
Me oh my. For the first time since November 2003, Roger Federer will not be in the top two in the world come Monday after that 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 defeat to Berdych.
