Player nominations announced for World Group
The player nominations have been submitted ahead of the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group first round ties, being played from 5-7 March.
Juan Carlos Ferrero and David Ferrer lead Spain’s title defence alongside Tommy Robredo and Marcel Granollers. The Spanish team is chasing its third successive trophy, a feat that was last achieved by USA back in the early 1970s.
Spain’s opposition, Switzerland, is without Roger Federer and so Stanislas Wawrinka is supported in the singles line-up by Marco Chiudinelli. The Swiss side is attempting to end the Spaniards’ 20-tie unbeaten run on clay.
Belgrade hosts the much-anticipated tie between Serbia and USA, in which Novak Djokovic, the world No. 2, spearheads the home nation’s challenge. Patrick McEnroe, the American captain, has selected doubles specialists Bob and Mike Bryan and the inexperienced singles line-up of John Isner and Sam Querrey.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga heads up France’s team against Germany with Gael Monfils, Michael Llodra and Julien Benneteau also in the side. The 24-year-old has never been defeated in Davis Cup play, holding a perfect 6-0 record since making his debut in 2008. Philipp Kohlschreiber is the top ranked player in the German team.
Among the other top players to be nominated for their nation are Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko, Sweden’s Robin Soderling, Croatia’s Marin Cilic, Chile’s Fernando Gonzalez and Czech Republic’s Radek Stepanek and Tomas Berdych.
