World No. 6 Tomas Berdych set a quarter-final clash with either Andy Murray or Gilles Simon as he defeated South Africa’s Kevin Anderson 7-6(5), 7-5 on Thursday at the Mutua Madrid Open. The Czech, runner-up at this ATP World Tour Masters 1000 clay-court tournament last year, is bidding to go one better and win his first title of the season.

Berdych passed a tough test against Anderson, who has made a career-best start to the season with runner-up showings in Sydney (l. to Tomic) and Casablanca (l. to Robredo). The South African twice served for the first set at 5-4 and 6-5, but could not close it out and paid the price in the subsequent tie-break. Berdych then broke serve in the 11th game of the second set before sealing victory in one hour and 53 minutes.
