Poland’s Jerzy Janowicz will take on defending Mutua Madrid Open runner-up Tomas Berdych after prevailing in a first-round clash between two Top 25 players on Monday.

In a first-time meeting, the 24th-ranked Janowicz defeated 18th-ranked Sam Querrey 6-3, 6-4, breaking the American once in each set to wrap up the win in 68 minutes. Janowicz notched his 10th tour-level win of the season and will look to avenge his quarter-final loss to World No. 6 Berdych in Marseille earlier this year.


First on Arantxa Sanchez Vicario Court is the No. 1 player from Poland Jerzy Janowicz and No. 6 seed/last year’s runner-up Tomas Berdych, who is looking for his 400th career Tour-level win.

Hot on the heels of Andy Murray, Tomas Berdych became the second player this week to reach the 400 wins milestone, beating Jerzy Janowicz 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesday to reach the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open.

The fifth-seeded Czech advances to a clash with either Juan Monaco or Kevin Anderson as he bids to reach his seventh tour-level quarter-final of the season. Playing the No. 24-ranked Janowicz for the second time this year, both players struck 10 aces, but Berdych was able to save eight of the nine break points he faced to prevail in two hours and 15 minutes.

The 27-year-old Berdych reached the final in Madrid last year, finishing runner-up to Roger Federer. He is bidding to win his second ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament this week.
