Stanislas Wawrinka gave Switzerland a 1-0 lead over defending champions Czech Republic on Friday in the first round of the Davis Cup by beating Lukas Rosol 6-4, 6-3, 6-4. In the second singles match, Tomas Berdych was to play 289th-ranked Henri Laaksonen, who is making his Davis Cup debut for Switzerland.

Tomas Berdych overcame a spirited performance from Henri Laaksonen to keep the defending champions in the hunt for a spot in the World Group quarterfinals after Wawrinka had given the hosts an early lead. Berdych needed two hours 35 minutes to overcome world No. 289 Henri Laaksonen 6-3, 6-2, 6-7, 6-1.

Tomas Berdych won his match Friday to bring defending champion Czech Republic to 1-1 against Switzerland after the opening singles.
The sixth-ranked Berdych eased to a 6-3, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-1 victory over 289th-ranked Henri Laaksonen on an indoor hardcourt at Palexpo Arena.
Earlier, Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka beat Lukas Rosol 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.
Roger Federer is skipping the best-of-five series, while Czech veteran Radek Stepanek is sidelined by injury
