World number six Tomas Berdych has taken the final spot in next week's AAMI Classic as he ramps up his Australian Open preparations.
Berdych was a surprise loser in the quarter-finals of the Chennai Open this week, going down in three sets to world number 80 Roberto Bautista Agut.
With the Czech star short of match practice ahead of the year's first grand slam tournament he has decided to compete in the eight-man exhibition tournament at Kooyong.
Tournament director Colin Stubbs revealed it was a phone call from Berdych's friend and former world number three Ivan Ljubicic that helped the 2010 Wimbledon finalist get in the field.
Juan Martin del Potro (seven) and Janko Tipsarevic (nine) are the other top-10 players in the field, while Juan Monaco, Milos Raonic, Kei Nishikori, Marcos Baghdatis and Australian Lleyton Hewitt are also competing.
