Fifth seed Tomas Berdych won his opener at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris, defeating Andreas Seppi 7-6(6), 6-2 in the second round on Tuesday.
The 2005 champion broke Seppi three times to advance in one hour and 40 minutes. The sixth-ranked Berdych improved to a 5-2 record in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series and has won all three of their meetings this season.
The Czech is bidding to win his third indoor hard-court title of the year, following triumphs in Montpellier (d. Monfils) and Stockholm (d. Tsonga). He will be one of eight players competing at the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London, having qualified for the third straight season.
