Shanghai Thursday Preview - Third Round Match-Ups Include Seven Of Top 10 Seeds

The third round at the Shanghai ATP Masters 1000 on Thursday features seven of the Top 10 seeds, led by top seed Rafael Nadal, No. 2 seed and last year's Tennis Masters Cup champion Novak Djokovic and No. 5 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, all on Stadium Court.

In addition, No. 6 Nikolay Davydenko, who was runner-up at the Tennis Masters Cup last year, opens the schedule against No. 10 Fernando Gonzalez. Both players are in pursuit of a spot in the year-end Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London next month. Tsonga and No. 9 Robin Soderling also meet in a big third round battle.

Gilles Simon beat Tomas Berdych 6-3, 6-4 in 91 minutes

ATP Masters 1000 tennis tournament at Qizhong Stadium Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009 in Shanghai, China.


On the 6th match day of Shnghai ATP 1000 Masters, Tomas Berdych from Czech Republic met the world No.10, as well as the 8th seed player, Gilles Simon from France in 3rd round. They recorded 4 meets and had a 2-2 tie. Berdych had a more difficult time going to the 3rd round after defeating Croatian Marin Cilic and Russian Marat Safin both in 3 sets. The talented French took over Berdych 6-3, 6-4.

Berdych held a break point in the first game, but Simon struggled to save it by a huge serve after a deuce. Following 2 games became a tough tie while both players managed to keep their service games after several well placed shots. In his second service game, Berdych had a hard time when Simon took the game in the first break point after a double fault from the Czech. In the 5th game, Berdych took advantage of a handful faults from Simon and broke back, forcing a 3-2. The next two service games were kept without difficult when neither of the players could seize the chance to make a break point. Simon broke again in the 8th game while Berdych seemed to lose his serve pace, forcing a 5-3 lead. The French served to take over the first set comfortably by 6-3 in about 40 minutes.

The game went into a close situation that first two service games were kept without a singe break point. In the 3rd game, the tough Czech gave his opponent 3 break points, but he was able to take straight 4 points afterwards by his excellent first serve and took the game eventually, leading the game to 2-1. Both sides showed their strength and the game came to a tight condition. Simon took the game by 6-4 in the final set, making himself another seed to the 4th round.
