EUROSPORT Match Report
Nadal, playing just his second tournament back since that injury, made a blistering start to the match, breaking in the opening game with some destructive hitting that resulted in Berdych's desperate defensive lob falling wide.
The Spaniard held serve to love in the very next game to consolidate the early break and although Berdych recovered to start posting service holds of his own, the first set was already as good as won for Nadal.
And the world number three closed out the first set in the 10th game after earning a set point with a dipping, sliced backhand that left the crowd gasping in awe. Berdych could only clump it into the net, and mis-hit a forehand return of serve on the next point.
The second set was a mich tighter affair with both players trading solid service holds for the most part. with the only break point opportunities going begging for Nadal in the fifth game as Berdych pulled himself out of trouble with some huge first serves.
Nadal even found himself serving to stay in the set in the 10th game although he did so with an outrageous flicked forehand winner across court that dipped over the net and died as soon as it hit the line.
But that winner seemed to break the Czech player's spirit as a couple of volley errors in the next, a forehand across court followed by a backhand across court, left Nadal in a position to whip a forehand across court to break.
That left the Spaniard to wrap things up with a simple service game that put him in the semi-finals.
