The two players will be facing off for the first time.
On Sunday, 2 August, 2009 Ernests Gulbis beat Kevin Kim 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 to advance to the second round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic. Gulbis, who said the combination of an upset stomach following lunch and not drinking enough fluids in the humid conditions led to him "feeling physically pretty bad" during the match, gutted out the briefly rain-delayed final set by breaking Kim three times. "I knew I needed to put more pressure on his second serve to move in," said Gulbis, who will next play eighth-seeded Tomas Berdych.

Eight-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych relied on calm nerves and experience to help him through his opener against 20-year-old Latvian Ernests Gulbis. Though Gulbis earned 13 break points during the second-round match, Berdych dropped serve just once and countered with a 100 conversion rate on his three chances to earn a 6-2, 7-6(6) victory. The World No. 18 reached the semi-finals in his only previous Washington appearance four years ago (l. to Blake).
I just woke up at 5.51 a.m. for match point! Tomas won tie-break and... the match!
The match started late on Tuesday night and ended around midnight...
