Czech Republic claim Hopman Cup title

The win likely installs the Czech Republic as the last champions to hold aloft the Hopman Cup trophy on the courts at Burswood Dome, ahead of the events move to Perth Arena.

World No.2 Petra Kvitova got the Czechs off to a blazing start, taking her nation out to a one-rubber lead with a 7-5 6-1 win over world No.9 Marion Bartoli in 89 minutes.

The opportunity was then handed to world No.7 Tomas Berdych to seal the tournament with a win over second-seeded France's Richard Gasquet, a man ranked just 12 places below him in the world and armed with one of the most damaging backhands on Tour.

Neither player was willing to give an inch but, after storming through a tiebreak in the first set and surviving a spirited comeback from his opponent, Berdych did his part to claim the championship with a 7-6 (7-0) 6-4 win in 94 minutes.
