2002 - Tomas Berdych is a 17-year-old from the Czech Republic. He is a right-hander with a two-handed backhand. He currently the #15 ranked junior in the world and has been as high as #11. His junior's win-loss record this year is a stellar 33-9 with 4 titles. But he has had limited success in the grand slams. At the beginning of this year, Berdych had only 1 ATP ranking point. His first pro-level action of the year was at the challenger in Prague in May. There he received a wild card and made it to the quarterfinals. That week saw him get a huge 617 spot jump in the rankings. He got a couple of more points when he won matches in Slovakia F4 and Czech Republic F4. Then at Czech Republic F5, he took his first pro title of any kind, defeating 5 fellow Czechs on his way to victory. That got him to #545. But he wasn't done yet as he took advantage of an increase of futures events in the Czech Republic this year by taking another title at Czech Republic F8 a few weeks ago in November. This time it got his ranking up to #409. This past week he reached the quarterfinals at Czech F10 and his year-end ranking is #398, up from #1383, making him one of the ranking movers of the year! Berdych still has some junior's eligibility left but he will be another to watch in the coming years.
