The DBS Singapore Slammers went down 21-29 to the Manila Mavericks on Tuesday night, the opening day of the local leg of the Coca-Cola International Premier Tennis League (IPTL).

Despite a line-up that included former men's world No. 1 Andre Agassi and world No. 1 women's player Serena Williams, the home team was able to post just one win out of five matches. Williams beat Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens 6-5 after a hard-fought match, but the Slammers were unable to outplay their opponents in the other matches, despite their opponents fielding a side that was missing star players Andy Murray and Maria Sharapova.

In the men's legends singles, Agassi was beaten 6-3 by Australia's Mark Philippoussis, while Tomas Berdych and Lleyton Hewitt were defeated 6-4 by Treat Huey and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the men's doubles.
