Significant moves were made in the Battle for London last week with the players ranked between No. 5 and No. 8 in the South African Airways 2011 ATP Year-To-Date Rankings distancing themselves from the chasing pack.
Five hundred points now separate eighth-placed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who is in line to take the last remaining berth at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, and ninth-placed Nicolas Almagro, who is on the cusp of the qualification spots. Four places remain to join Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Roger Federer in the elite eight-man field at London’s O2 Arena in November.
Czech Tomas Berdych boosted his chances of qualifying for the season finale for the second year in a row after picking up 500 points with victory at the China Open (d. Cilic). He overtook Tsonga, whom he defeated in the semi-finals in Beijing, at seventh position in the standings. David Ferrer cemented his position at No. 5 with a semi-final showing at the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships (l. to Murray). The Spaniard leads sixth-placed Mardy Fish by 835 points and is bidding to qualify for the year-end championships for the third time.
