2011 Beijing Singles Round 1 - Tomas Berdych vs Jurgen Melzer

Czech third seed Tomas Berdych will be hoping for a recovery from the shoulder problem which has plagued him since the summer and forced his retirement from a US Open third round match. His first test will come against Austrian Jurgen Melzer, a quarterfinalist this week in Kuala Lumpur.

Berdych Beats Melzer


Third seed Tomas Berdych, currently No. 8 in the Battle For London, survived a potentially tricky test against former Top 10 star Jurgen Melzer of Austria 7-5, 7-5 in one hour and 38 minutes. Berdych won 76 per cent of his service points, hitting five aces and saving all three break points he faced. The Czech has reached the quarter-finals or better at 13 tournaments this season.

Tomas Berdych def. Jurgen Melzer 7-5, 7-5


Third seed Tomas Berdych advanced to the second round following his 7-5, 7-5 victory over Jurgen Melzer. The 26-year-old Czech held twelve consecutive service games through 97 minutes of play. Berdych completed his effort with five aces and two breaks of serve.


He is scheduled to face qualifier Philipp Kohlschreiber in the next round. The German dismissed Tommy Robredo in the first round.
