17 September 2011 - Happy Birthday Dear Tomas Berdych... 26!

Posted on September 17, 2011 at 2:50 AM

Tomas Berdych picked up a racquet at the age of five and looked set to be the face of modern day tennis for the Czech Republic after the famous success of compatriots Ivan Lendl, Tomas Smid, Pavel Slozil and Jan Kodes, who lifted the Davis Cup back in 1980.

Having nailed all the age-group junior titles back in the Czech Republic, his rise in the professional circuit, however, indicated that he still has a lot more to give with a career high of sixth in the ATP rankings last year.

Currently ninth in the world, the 25-year-old is well remembered for disposing of then world No. 1 Roger Federer in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games in the second round. He was 18 years old when he defeated the Swiss.

Berdych, again, had a fine run against FedEx in the quarter-finals in Cincinnati last month, winning in straight sets. His gallant run ended when he retired against current world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals, citing shoulder injury.

Q: What is your ultimate dream as a player?

TB: Definitely winning a Grand Slam title. I don’t care which one but to win one is my dream. That is the reason I started playing tennis.

Q: What is your most memorable win in tennis?

TB: It has to be the one against Roger in the Wimbledon quarter-finals (6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4) last year.

Q: What is your most painful loss?

TB: I don’t like to lose any matches. But the most painful for me was in the Davis Cup match in 2008 against Russia when I was playing against (Nikolay) Davydenko. It was 2-2 and I had to win. I sprained my ankle and had to retire immediately. I was out from the game for one and half months. It was painful for me because we lost and also my ankle hurt so much.

Q: If you were not a tennis player, what sport would you play?

TB: Probably ice hockey. Ice hockey is famous in Czech Republic, so yes, I would probably be an ice hockey player.

Q: Now for some quick-draw questions. Grass or hard court?

TB: Grass.

Q: The video game Gran Turismo of Need For Speed?

TB: Definitely Gran Turismo.

Q: Ferrari or Lamborghini?

TB: I would go for Porsche (chuckles).

Q: The beach or the Alpines?

TB: The beach.

Q: Sushi or duck à l’orange?

TB: Sushi.

Rascal Flatts "My Wish"  Lyrics

"My Wish"

I hope that the days come easy and the moments pass slow,

And each road leads you where you want to go,

And if you're faced with a choice, and you have to choose,

I hope you choose the one that means the most to you.

And if one door opens to another door closed,

I hope you keep on walkin' till you find the window,

If it's cold outside, show the world the warmth of your smile.

But more than anything, more than anything,

My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to,

Your dreams stay big, and your worries stay small,

You never need to carry more than you can hold,

And while you're out there getting where you're getting to,

I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too,

 Yeah, this, is my wish.

I hope you never look back, but you never forget,

All the ones who love you, in the place you left,

I hope you always forgive, and you never regret,

And you help somebody every chance you get,

Oh, you find God's grace, in every mistake,

And you always give more than you take.

This is my wish

I hope you know somebody loves you

May all your dreams stay big.
