Tomas Berdych rose one place to eighth

Berdych up one to No. 8 in world rankings

Monday, July 11, 2011

Tomas Berdych edged past Mardy Fish and into eighth in the men's world tennis rankings, the only change in the Top 10 this week.

Fish skipped the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships last week to participate in the Davis Cup quarterfinals for the United States. Fish won at Newport, R.I., last year so gave up 250 rankings points by missing the event in 2011.

That was enough for Berdych to move up one spot and shove Fish to ninth.

Fish also dropped a pair of tough matches. Feliciano Lopez took a five-set decision on Friday and David Ferrer beat Fish 7-5, 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 7-6 (7-5) in the deciding match of the best-of-five series.

John Isner, who won the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships this year, improved his ranking 10 places to 36th,

Novak Djokovic, with 13,155 points, tops the rankings ahead of Rafael Nadal (11,270) and Roger Federer (9,230). Andy Murray is fourth (6,855) and Robin Soderling (4.325) is fifth.

Ferrer, with 4,150 points, isn't far behind Soderling in sixth while Gael Monfils (2,755) is seventh followed by Berdych (2,470), Fish (2,435) and Andy Roddick (2,110).

Soderling, Ferrer and Berdych are in the field at this week's Swedish Open and Monfils is the top seed at the Mercedes Cup in Germany, which began Monday.
