Two other seeds avoided upsets and reached the semifinals, as No. 2 Czech Tomas Berdych topped Latvian wild card Ernests Gulbis 6-1, 6-4 and No. 3 Spaniard Nicolas Almagro erased compatriot Pablo Andujar by an identical 6-1, 6-4 score on Day 5.
The 2010 Wimbledon runner-up Berdych and two-time 2011 clay-court titlist Almagro will face off in the final four here on Friday. Berdych is 3-1 lifetime against Almagro -- all on clay. The steady Almagro will appear in his sixth semifinal of the year.

Almagro beats Berdych to reach Nice Open final

With Roland Garros just two days away, World No. 12 Nicolas Almagro advanced to his fourth ATP World Tour clay-court final of the season as he dismissed second seed Tomas Berdych 6-4, 6-4 in the semi-finals of the Open de Nice Côte d’Azur on Friday.
The Spaniard overturned a 1-3 record against Berdych as he converted all three of his break point opportunities and won 89 per cent of points behind his first serve to claim victory in 87 minutes. World No. 6 Berdych was looking to reach his first tour-level final since finishing runner-up at Wimbledon in July 2010.
