MATCH REPORT - Eurosport

Good afternoon and welcome to the first quarter-final of the Madrid Masters. Tomas Berdych is facing Thomaz Bellucci in the first match of the day. Berdych to serve.

Berdych loses a couple of points in that first service game, but a fairly comfortable hold for the big man. Now to see what Bellucci can do with his first service game. 1-0

Bellucci content to slug it out from the back of the court. Not the biggest serve in the world, but he has a decent forehand on the clay. Berdych misfiring a bit from the back of the court. We are level at 1-1 in the opening set. 1-1

A love service game from Berdych. No real pressure being applied by Bellucci to the seventh seed's serve as Bellucci dumps an attempted passing shot into the net. Games on serve in this opening set. 2-1

Bellucci cutting a composed figure on the court. Getting plenty of first serves in. Berdych making a few unforced errors as the Brazilian drops only point on serve. We are level at 2-2.

Berdych encountering little difficulty in holding serve. Drops only one point in the fifth game of the set. Bellucci getting plenty of energy into his groundstrokes, but he is wide of the target on more than one occasion. We remain on serve and no sign of a break yet. 3-2

Bellucci punching his racket after holding serve in that game. Better signs from Berdych, but no break as Bellucci holds. Both men managing to get some fizz on their groundstrokes, and content to slug it out from deep. 3-3

Berdych coming to the net to punch away a winning volley after Bellucci throws in a few unforced errors. Bellucci is long with a backhand up the line as his frustration begins to grow. Berdych ahead by the odd game in seven. 4-3

A love service game from Bellucci. Not many fireworks in this one. Both men looking relatively comfortable on serve as we approach the business end of the set. 4-4

Another service game passes off without too much animation. Bellucci can't make any inroad into the Berdych serves as the Czech player moves to within a game of the opening set. Bellucci will serve to save the set. 5-4

Another love service game. No break points in the match yet. Bellucci winning 88% of points on first serve with Berdych successful in 87% of his points on first serve. Pretty low-key affair this one. 5-5

First deuce that I can recall in this match. Suddenly hopes are raised of a break from Bellucci, but he dumps a forehand into the net from deep as Berdych brings up advantage for a 6-5 lead. A booming forehand from Berdych is good enough to see out the game as he recovers from trailing 0-30 to move 6-5 to the good.

A few Brazilian flags are flying as Bellucci goes through the gears with a couple of fine winners. It was always heading this way, but we are into a tie-break to sort out the destination of the first set. Tie Break. 6-6

SET TO BELLUCCI! Bellucci enjoys the first mini-break of the match. Errors begin to fly from the racket of Berdych as Bellucci moves 4-0 ahead in the tie-break with a couple of mini-breaks. A fine serve from the Czech player earns him his first point of the breaker, but an ace from Bellucci makes it 5-1. Berdych pushes the boat out with an attempted winner down the line, but is wide of the mark. Five set points to Bellucci. He takes out the set on the second set point. 6-7

A love service game from Bellucci to start the second set. Very tidy stuff from the Brazilian player, who is playing with the same level of intensity that accounted for Andy Murray yesterday. Some lovely stuff. Berdych in a spot of bother. Needs to raise his levels if he is to avoid going the same way as Murray. 0-1

No closer to that elusive first break point. Berdych ships a couple of points on serve, but is still strong enough to pocket the game. All level at 1-1 in the second set. 1-1

Berdych gets to 0-30 on the Bellucci serve, but the Brazilian plays a deft little drop shot in recovering to level at 30-30. Berdych is then long with a groundstroke from the back of the court before he dumps a shot into the net. A 2-1 lead for Bellucci in this set as he recovers from trailing 0-30 to move 2-1 ahead. 1-2

Berdych manages to dig out a stunning diving volley to win a key point in moving 40-30 ahead. Bellucci denied a break point, but he forces matters to deuce seconds later with a crunching groundstroke from the back of the court. He can't keep the pressure on the seventh seed, who claims the game to level at 2-2.

Not exactly thrill-a-minute stuff this one, but that seems to be suiting the game of Bellucci, who is inching closer and closer to his intended destination. He drops one point on serve and leads by the odd game in five. Games remain on serve. 2-3

The war of attrition continues as Bellucci fails with an attempted drop shot. Berdych spots the danger to win the point and is well in control in restoring parity in the second set. No break points after 18 games. These two men evenly matched on clay. 3-3

Big hold for Bellucci there after being forced to deuce in that set. He holds himself together at deuce and is now two games from winning the set and the match. Pressure on Berdych to hold in this game. 3-4

BREAK FOR BELLUCCI! Massive moment as Berdych sees a groundstroke from deep fly wide of the target. Was a bit of confusion for a second, but the umpire studies the mark and he is right. First break of the match and Bellucci will serve for the match. 3-5

GAME, SET AND MATCH BELLUCCI! The young Brazilian brings up three match points, but needs only one as he slams a forehand beyond Berdych. Berdych congratulates his opponent, who is full deserving of his victory. He will face Novak Djokovic or David Ferrer in the last four. 3-6

What Tomas said in post-match interview

"From my point of view I think I played a solid game, it was a tight encounter, too bad for the missed break point opportunity. Since our last meeting, I must say that he has improved a lot and he was really playing very well today"
