Czech Republic hosts new boys Kazakhstan in the World Group first round in 2011. It will be a first meeting between the two nations and the Czechs, who finished runners-up in 2009, will be favourites to progress. Kazakhstan is making its debut in Davis Cup’s top tier.
Czech Republic narrowly lost 3-2 to Serbia in the World Group semifinals in Belgrade. Trailing 2-1 going into the third day's play, Novak Djokovic drew the home team level before Janko Tipsarevic defeated Radek Stepanek 60 76 64 in the decisive fifth rubber.
Czech Republic - then Czechoslovakia - was crowned champion in 1980 for the only time in its history, and has also finished runner-up on two further occassions, in 1975 and 2009. Along with USA and Sweden, it has appeared in the World Group in all but one year. Czech players represented Czechoslovakia until 1992, and then Czech/Slovak Republics in 1993.
