Time to party

The Fed Express proved partying like a rock star isn't always possible when you're the world No 2 and possibly the most famous player on tour.

While Tomas Berdych, Novak Djokovic and Nikolay Davydenko ate, drank and laughed with friends at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships players' party on Tuesday night, Federer was focused on his first win through to the second round of the tournament.

The Swiss star beat Somdev Devvarman of India with few complications, but even when he'd rushed a shower and change, it was still difficult for the four-time Dubai winner to relax.

If you didn't see Federer arrive you didn't have to. Instead, your eyes just had to follow the throng of people moving steadily, like bees around a honeypot. A charming and very calm Federer posed for the necessary shots, shook hands with the organisers before sitting down for a brief conversation with tournament organiser Colm McLoughlin, managing director of Dubai Duty Free, with whom he has become good friends.

Signing a few autographs and posing for some photographs, security escorted him from the party, which took place on the grass at the Aviation Club.

A hungry Federer then sent a message back to party staff to send some of the curry, rice and Indian bread over to the player's lounge. What's a tennis star to do.

Meanwhile Djokovic, along with his brother and girlfriend, Jelena Ristic, made up for any absences and looked in fine form. Magician James Harrington shocked and amazed table after table with his impressive sleight-of-hand tricks. Tomas Berdych and Mikhail Youzhny along with Ivan Ljubicic made early exits but Davydenko and his beautiful wife Irina went the distance and enjoyed the evening.

Marcos Baghdatis, who retired from his first round game earlier the same day, was intrigued by the falcon and finally plucked up the courage to hold the bird, but never looked completely comfortable.

The players enjoyed a lavish spread of cold cuts, salads and numerous meat and vegetarian dishes as well as a spectacular choice of desserts.
