World No. 7 and Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win over Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu in his second-round opening match at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters, Tuesday afternoon in Cincinnati.
Berdych raced out to a 4-0 lead in the second set, but played his first loose service game as he attempted to close out the match at 5-2 in the second set. He would not be denied a second time, serving out the match at love on his next opportunity.
The 24-year-old Czech is in the midst of a stellar season, highlighted by runner-up finishes at Wimbledon (l. to Nadal) and the Sony Ericsson Open (l. to Roddick) and a semi-final run at Roland Garros (l. to Soderling). He narrowly lost to Roger Federer last week in the Rogers Cup quarter-finals, falling in a third-set tie-break.
Berdych, a quarter-finalist last year at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tennis tournament in Cincinnati (l. to Nadal), next confronts recent Washington finalist Marcos Baghdatis, who toughed out a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(4) win over Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci in two hours and eight minutes.
Berdych holds a 2-1 edge over the 20th-ranked Baghdatis in the head-to-head series, most recently defeating the Cypriot in the 2010 season opener at Brisbane.
