Double the joy for the Slammers
07 December 2016
The OUE Singapore Slammers run riot against the UAE Royals on Day 5.
The OUE Singapore Slammers just keep on rolling on home ground. This time it was against the UAE Royals, who couldn’t stop the local team. It was a strong 30-18 win for the Slammers, who will now try to complete a perfect run at home.
As reigning champions of the Coca-Cola International Premier Tennis League, the Slammers had a slow start in Japan but since they have arrived in Singapore, they have been unstoppable.
With a win over the Royals, the Slammers have leapfrogged the Emirati side into second spot in the overall Standings, where they lie just one point behind IPTL leaders, the Indian Aces.
Carlos Moyà enjoyed sweet revenge against Goran Ivanisevic and beat the big Croat with a stunning 6-2 scoreline to level their head-to-head at this season's IPTL and also give the first set to the Slammers.
That result gave confidence to Kiki Bertens, who had the same result against UAE Royals' Ana Ivanovic. The Dutchwoman was infallible, converting all four break points she created during the encounter.
Bertens also played Mixed Doubles alongside Marcelo Melo. The Slammers duo faced Martina Hingis and Daniel Nestor and kept the momentum going.
In the Men’s doubles set, the fight between Marcelo Melo/Marcos Baghdatis and Daniel Nestor/Pablo Cuevas was utterly spectacular, with the Slammers side taking the set in the Shoot-out.
The final set was Nick Kyrgios' time to shine as the Aussie completed a clean sweep for the home team with victory over Tomas Berdych.
After the end of the second day in Singapore, here's how the teams stand!
