Marin Cilic upsets world number eight Tomas Berdych to reach the quarterfinal of the 2016 Western & Southern Open.
World no. 14 Marin Cilic advances to the quarterfinals of the 2016 Western & Southern Open with an upset win over world no. 8 Tomas Berdych. Marin Cilic takes a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Berdych in a one hour and fifty-five minute round of 16 match. The win improves Marin Cilic to a 5-6 record against the higher ranked Berdych in their career head to head singles meetings. Prior to their first matchup of the year in the Cincinnati ATP 1000 Masters event, Marin Cilic and Tomas Berdych last faced each other in 2014, with both players splitting two match wins apiece in their four matches that year.
Marin Cilic kicks off the round of 16 match by winning the three games over Tomas Berdych on his way to an early 4-1 lead. Tomas Berdych gains ground on Marin Cilic at 4-2 after winning the sixth game. The former world no. 8 Marin Cilic reaches set point first with a 40-30 win in the seventh game, but Berdych manages to save the following game at 5-3 after winning a long rally. Marin Cilic finally claims the match opener in the ninth game to end the first set after thirty-four minutes. The 6’6’’ Marin Cilic unleashed 9 aces in the first set, while his opponent Berdych was only able to come up with 3 aces of his own. The second set begins with Marin Cilic seemingly poised to close out Tomas Berdych early, as he wins the first two games on his way to an early 3-1 advantage. However, Berdych bounces back by winning three of the next four games to tie the second set at 4-4. Berdych evens out the match with Marin Cilic by winning two consecutive games to close out the second frame. Tomas Berdych and Marin Cilic combined for 9 aces during the one hour and fifty-five minute set; 4 for Berdych and 5 for Cilic. The Czech world number eight broke Marin Cilic twice in five of his break point attempts. By contrast, Marin Cilic was only able to convert one out of three of his break point opportunities.
Tomas Berdych wins his third straight games against Marin Cilic as he wins two of the first three games of the final frame for an early 2-1 lead. From this point of the final frame, Marin Cilic wins two consecutive games to take the round of 16 match after a thirty-eight minute third set. He dominated the service game by winning all 13 of his first serve points as well as 7 of 8 (88) second serve points.
Marin Cilic will meet Croatian compatriot Borna Coric in the 2016 Cincinnati Open quarterfinal. The higher ranked Marin Cilic holds a 1-0 record over world no. 49 Coric. The 19-year old Coric dropped his first match against Marin Cilic during the round of 32 in the 2015 Shanghai Masters.
No. 12 seed Marin Cilic fired 25 aces in dismissing Tomas Berdych 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Cilic's former coach Goran Ivanisevic is now working with Berdych.
