Sixth seed Tomas Berdych battled hard to beat Alexandr Nedovyesov, currently No. 99 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 on Wednesday for a place in the Roland Garros third round for the fourth time.
Berdych won 83 per cent of his first service points against 27-year-old Nedovyesov, who he also beat in this year’s Australian Open first round. Berdych will next face No. 27 seed Roberto Bautista Agut.
“It was definitely a tough one,” said Berdych. “He really was playing well. The only thing I was struggling with was his serve. Once I found the rhythm how to return that, it was fine. That was the key of the game.”
Looking ahead to his clash against Bautista Agut, Berdych said, “His game is very solid. He's a great baseline player and plays very solid from both sides. He's a guy coming up. He's not [an] easy opponent.”
Berdych was beaten by Carlos Berlocq in the Portugal Open final earlier this month.
