Posted on March 9, 2014 at 7:20 PM

Coming weekend Tomas is back in action at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California. It's the first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 of the year.

No need to say, it was a long trip from Dubai to Indian Wells, via Hong Kong. The birdman spent almost a full day flying in the sky^^

  • From Dubai U.A.E to Hong Kong

- 3704.3 miles / 5961.5 km / 7 hrs, 41 mins

  • From Hong Kong  to Indian Wells, California U.S.A

 - 7366.7 miles / 11855.6 km / 15 hrs, 18 mins

Well, i't's a good thing that Tomas had some extra days off before the start of the tournament thanks to a first round bye. He will open his Californian campaign Sunday against Spaniard Roberto Bautista-Agut who beat [WC] Steve Johnson (USA) Friday in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. Berdych and Bautista-Agut have played against each other twice before on hard court, each player has won once.

Bautista Agut Upsets Berdych

Indian Wells, U.S.A.

by Staff  |  09.03.2014

Roberto Bautista Agut recorded the third Top 10 win of his career on Sunday at the BNP Paribas Open when the World No. 53 defeated fourth seed Tomas Berdych 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the second round. He will next face No. 26 seed Jarkko Nieminen or Florian Mayer.

Bautista Agut dictated play with his forehand and came within one point of leading 4-1 in the deciding set before Berdych battled back, only to be broken for the fifth time in the match at 4-4. Bautista Agut had led 4-2 in the first set, before Berdych won four straight games. The pair’s third FedEx ATP Head2Head clash lasted two hours and 23 minutes.

Bautista Agut, who is now 3-6 lifetime against the Top 10 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, also beat Juan Martin del Potro in the Australian Open second round two months ago. Berdych, who reached the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships final last week, dropped to a 16-4 match record on the season that includes his eighth ATP World Tour title at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam (d. Cilic).

“He was a tough opponent… [and] really handled the tough situation today really well,” said Berdych. “Anything I touched today was basically bad and was wrong. It [was] definitely my worst match that I had this year. I was late everywhere. I was not hitting the ball cleanly and that's it.”
