Third seed Tomas Berdych has an opportunity to reach the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships final for the second year in a row on Friday when he plays seventh seed Philipp Kohlschreiber in the semi-finals. Berdych leads 7-1 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series, but the pair has not met for two years.
Berdych extended his winning streak to 10 matches, which includes capturing his eighth ATP World Tour title at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament (d. Dubai: Last year’s Dubai Duty Free Men’s Open losing finalist Tomas Berdych eased his way to a semi-final against Philipp Kohlschreiber on Friday with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Earlier in the day, defending champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia was handed a walkover after Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny withdrew from their quarter-final due to illness.
Berdych, who had ended on the losing side to Novak Djokovic last year, was in complete control throughout the one hour and 28 minutes he spent on Centre Court against his French opponent.
Tsonga hit a forehand wide for Berdych to break serve for the only time and take the first set 6-4 in 35 minutes. In the second set, suddenly the Czech pulled away from his opponent with the scores locked at 3-3 and took the next three games to wrap up set and match.

Third seed and 2013 runner-up Tomas Berdych dismisses fifth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the Dubai quarter-finals on Thursday.
“It was very close,” said Berdych. “Especially the second set was very tight, very close. I faced many break points I think two games in a row in my serve, which was very tough, but I think that was really the key of today's game, that I managed to save that. And then when I got a chance in the end of the second set I got a bit lucky, that's true, on that break point when Jo helped me.”
Q. What was the powder on your back about?
TOMAS BERDYCH: (Smiling.) Glad that you are not the third one asking me if I got a sunburn, you know. Definitely not in my room it's not the sun.
No, I mean, I just asked to get hot cream on my back, and it was really a hot one. It starts to be really burning and really uncomfortable.
So I was just asking to get something which can help me to basically put it out or just try to clean it or something, whatever.
You know, finally happened, and, you know, I could concentrate more on my game than on my back.
