Berdych Gaining Momentum For Dubai
by Press Release | 21.01.2014
Last year’s Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships finalist Tomas Berdych sent a clear message today that he will again be a major threat in Dubai next month as he trumped world number 3 David Ferrer in a tense four set encounter in the Australian Open quarter finals.
Berdych’s win puts him into his first Australian Open semi final, after a remarkable run which saw him reach the quarter finals without being broken once on serve. His impressive form will put him in contention for another finals appearance when the ATP tournament kicks off in Dubai on 24 February.
The Czech right hander is currently ranked 7, after reaching a career high ranking of 5 in August 2013, before helping his country win the Davis Cup in November.
With wins over Djokovic, Federer, Murray and now Ferrer under his belt, the quiet achiever is heading to Dubai in scintillating form. Berdych sensationally knocked five time Champion Roger Federer out of the tournament in the semi-finals in Dubai last year before losing to Djokovic in a close final, going down 7-5 6-3.
With 8 career titles to date, Berdych will arrive in Dubai looking to add to his collection and go one better than last year. However with Djokovic playing great tennis and Federer finding his touch again, Berdych’s path to the Dubai title will be tough.
“We are delighted that we will be welcoming Tomas Berdych back to Dubai, after his wonderful performance here last year” said Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman of tournament owners and organisers Dubai Duty Free. “Berdych is a serious contender to add his name to the list of Dubai title holders, having proven his ability against the best in the world” he added.
“We are looking forward to some amazing matches next month in Dubai, with Djokovic and Berdych playing superb tennis, and with Federer returning to his winning form we are expecting some tough battles” according to Tournament Director Salah Tahlak.
The ATP World Tour event takes place between 24 February and 1 March and follows the WTA tournament that features an incredible six of the world’s top 10. Beginning on 17 February, the tournament will feature defending champion and 2011 Wimbledon Champion Petra Kvitova, 2012 Dubai title holder Agnieszka Radwanska, along with former World Number ones Caroline Wozniacki, Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic.
The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships is held under the patronage of H H Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
