For the fourth consecutive year, Tomas Berdych has proven he possesses the consistency to play at the highest level by qualifying for the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London.
Being a part of the elite eight-man group at The O2 is a goal that drives the Czech throughout the course of the year, as the event’s ambiance is as exceptional as they come.
“The reason why you practise hard is for this,” said Berdych. “When you step on court here at this arena, it’s one of the best feelings you can get on a tennis court. It’s very close to Centre Court in Wimbledon. This atmosphere is very special and unique. I really enjoy it.”
Among Berdych’s highlights in 2013 included cracking the Top 5 of the Emirates ATP Rankings for the first time on 19 August, notching four Top 3 victories and advancing to four ATP World Tour Masters 1000 semi-finals.
Reflecting on his body of work, Berdych said, “It’s been another consistent season which means I can be sitting here again. This time, it was not easy at all. It’s proof that it was a great season from the beginning until the end. Of course I will find some negatives. I’m missing a title but it was a consistent year.”
In his opening round-robin match, Berdych will face first-time qualifier Stanislas Wawrinka on Monday. The Swiss has a 7-5 FedEx ATP Head2Head record against Berdych and won their most recent meeting in the fourth round of the US Open.
“I’m going to try to bring my best game. Stan is going to try and do the same,” said Berdych. “I’m really looking forward to the match. I played him last time in the US Open, where he was playing really well. This time, the conditions will be more stable than outside. Other than that, I think the court will be similar.”
