• The top player from the Czech Republic enters the second round of his first clay court tournament with an 18-7 match record, with all but one match coming on hard courts

• He is coming off his 10th career ATP World Tour final (5-5), his second ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title match (won ’05 Paris) and his first final in the U.S. in Miami on Apr. 4 (l. to Roddick)…En route, defeated No. 1 Federer (saved one M.P.) in 4th Rd. and No. 7 Soderling in QF…Afterwards, went from 20 to No. 16 (enters No. 15 this week)

• Prior to Miami, he reached the quarter-finals in Indian Wells (d. No. 12 Verdasco in 3rd Rd., l. to No. 3 Nadal)

• He helped his country to a 4-1 first round Davis Cup win over Belgium (on clay), defeating O. Rochus in straight sets in the opening rubber and winning the doubles (w/Stepanek) in similar fashion

Berdych Storms Into Third Round


Verdasco will next face Czech No. 10 seed Tomas Berdych, who snapped a two-match losing streak in comprehensive fashion against Richard Gasquet of France as the sun set in Monaco. Berdych, who out-hit Gasquet for a 6-2, 6-0 victory in just 57 minutes, improved to a 19-7 match record on the year.


"I never found my game," said Gasquet. "He played incredibly well. It was an easy match for him."
