Third seed Nicolas Almagro, one of three Barclays ATP World Tour Finals contenders in action Friday at the If Stockholm Open, advanced to the semi-finals with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt. Hewitt fought back from a break down in the second set to level at 4-4, but Almagro snuffed out the Australian’s late fightback to prevail in 66 minutes.
The 27-year-old Almagro improved to a 55-19 match record on the season, highlighted by titles at the Brasil Open 2012 in Sao Paulo (d. Volandri) and the Open de Nice Côte d’Azur (d. Baker). The Murcia native is bidding to qualify for the year-end championships for the first time and is currently in 10th position in the South African Airways ATP Rankings Race To London.
In the semi-finals, Almagro will square off against World No. 6 Tomas Berdych. The No. 2 seed evened his record versus Mikhail Youzhny to a 6-6 mark after securing a 6-3, 7-6(2) victory over the Russian. Berdych wiped away nine of the 10 break points against his serve and fired eight aces.
The Czech is in line to qualify for the season-ending championship at the O2 Arena for the third straight year, standing in sixth place. Berdych has enjoyed a consistent season, winning the Open Sud de France title in Montpellier (d. Monfils), reaching the Mutua Madrid Open (l. to Federer) and Winston-Salem Open (l. to Isner) finals and advancing to the semi-finals of the US Open (l. to Murray), Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters (l. to Djokovic) and Shanghai Rolex Masters (l. to Djokovic).
Fellow London hopeful Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-3, 6-4 to move through to the semi-finals. The top-seeded Tsonga won 81 per cent of his first serve points to improve to 4-0 against Stakhovsky. The Ukranian dropped to 0-19 against Top 10 opponents.
Tsonga, currently eighth in the Race To London, finished runner-up to Roger Federer at the season finale last season. He is seeking his third hard-court crown in 2012, having captured trophies in Doha (d. Monfils) and Metz (d. Seppi). For a place in Sunday’s final, Tsonga will face Marcos Baghdatis.
The seventh-seeded Baghdatis reached his second ATP World Tour semi-final in three weeks as he defeated Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis 6-3, 7-6(4) in 89 minutes, having saved all four break points he faced. Tomas Berdych defeated Michail Youzhny after a very well played match at The Royal Tennishalls’ centre court.
Second seed Czech Berdych won the first set, 6-3, thanks to a steady serve and characteristic heavy forehand stroke. The second set advanced into a tough battle between the hard hitting Berdych and the elegant Youzhny. Berdych, ranked 6th in the world, had to work hard to win. The second set went to a tie break where Berdych showed class and won, 7-2.
On Saturday’s semifinal, Berdych is set against Spaniard Nicolas Almagro. This is going to be a very exciting game, not only for a place in If Stockholm Open’s final, but also full of prestige because the Czech and Spaniard are to face each other in the Davis Cup final in November, whereby there is a potential meet between Berdych and Almagro.
