2009 Shanghai Round 1: Tomas Berdych vs Marin Cilic

Posted on October 12, 2009 at 8:56 AM

Preview-Play Day 4: The Big Guns (from official website Shanghai)

.../... Another match that could bring a surprising conclusion is the one between 12th-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia and Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic.

Cilic heads into this match following a final's appearance in Beijing last week -- he lost out to Serbian Novak Djokovic. The good news is he should be feeling positive about nearly going all the way; the bad news is that Cilic isn't known for being a consistent performer on a weekly basis, at least not yet in his career and Berdych did beat him in Davis Cup three weeks ago.

Berdych upset 12th seed Cilic

Tomas must be so happy to be through to second round.

His parents, his coach Tomas Krupa were attending the match...

giving Tomas extra-motivation, I guess

Czech Tomas Berdych fought hard to de-rail the in-form Marin Cilic, breaking serve in the final game of the match to defeat the No. 12 seed 7-6[8], 3-6, 6-4. It is Berdych's second victory over Cilic, having also defeated the Croatian in five sets in the Davis Cup semi-finals last month

World No. 20 Berdych reached back-to-back quarter-finals in Kuala Lumpur (l. to Soderling) and Tokyo (l. to Youzhny) in the past two weeks and has compiled a 33-22 mark on the year. The 24 year old, who won his fifth ATP World Tour title at the BMW Open (d. Youzhny) in May, next will face Marat Safin.

The No. 13-ranked Cilic is one of several players in the race to clinch a spot at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in November and boosted his bid with a runner-up finish at the China Open (l. to Djokovic) last week. The 21 year old, who ousted Andy Murray to reach his first Grand Slam quarter-final at the US Open, dropped to a 40-18 mark on the season.

Tomas Berdych defeated 12th-seed Marin Cilic 7-6 [10-8] 3-6 6-4

The second match today in center court is between Berdych from Czech Republic and Croatian Cilic. The Croatian upset world No.2 Rafa Nadal in Beijing and claimed runner-up there. They had their first meet earlier this year in Davis Cup where Berdych had a tough win. Both players are born after the year 1985, which made this match a conversation among young generation. Berdych took the tough game by 7-6,3-6,6-4 in 2 hours and a half.

Both young players kept their first 2 service games while Cilic had more control in his service game because of his excellent serve. After a tie 2-2, Berdych had some difficulties in 5th game which he almost gave Cilic a break point, but he finally kept it with a heavy serve. Cilic lost his stability in the next game, giving Berdych a break chance and the Czech took it successfully, 4-2. Cilic was managed to break back in the 9th game, leading the game to 5-4. Berdych took the game in a tough tie break [10-8].

Set 2 continued to be a close game which both players were unable to break in the first 3 games. Berdych faced 2 break points in game 4, but he managed to save them with a excellent forehand return and a high quality serve, leading the game to 2-2. Afterwards, Cilic finally took the 5th break point in the 6th game, forcing a 4-2 lead. Berdych kept his service game in face of deadly stress but lost set 2 to Cilic eventually by 6-3.

Cilic held 2 break points in 3rd game in the final set and he took the first one to have a 2-1 lead. However, Berdych was able to break back in the next game, taking advantage of 2 double faults from the Croatian, 2-2. Cilic broke back in the next game again and kept the 6th game, leading the game to 4-2. In the key game 7, Berdych saved 3 break points and took his own service game before breaking again, forcing a tough tie 4-4. Finally, Berdych took the match after another break by 6-4.

Berdych will meet Safin in the next round.
