TOMAS Berdych is optimistic about making an impression in the Proton Malaysian Open Tennis Championships.
Riding high from his success in leading the Czech Republic to the Davis Cup final, Berdych hopes to bring his confidence onto the Putra Stadium court in Bukit Jalil.
The World No 16 helped Czech Republic beat Croatia 4-1 in their recent Davis Cup semi-final tie.
"I am really confident after earning two points in the Davis Cup. It is my second visit to this region and I hope to make it memorable," said Berdych at Putra Stadium yesterday.
He made his first appearance in Southeast Asia in the 2007 Thailand Open. He was a semi-finalist then.
"I will try my best to win my sixth career title in Kuala Lumpur. It is my first visit here and I love this place as the weather is great. It is also quiet and a nice place for great tennis," said the 24-year-old.
Berdych will open his Malaysian Open campaign against Russia's Igor Kunitsyn tomorrow.
"I reckon it will be an exciting tournament as it has attracted a world class field. My opening match will be tough as Igor is a good player.
"I lost to him in our only meeting in Moscow two years ago. However, I have gotten better over the years and I hope to turn the result," said Berdych, whose first career title was the 2005 Paris Masters.
Berdych holds the distinction of being the first player to defeat both Roger Federer of Switzerland and Spain's Rafael Nadal while they were ranked World No 1 and 2, respectively in 2007.
