Tomas won 1st set when all of a sudden Fernando Gonzalez retired. Tomas Berdych and Fernando Gonzalez had to square off in a blockbuster first-round encounter for the second straight year in Cincinnati... It was the first meeting in 2009 between Fernando Gonzalez and Tomas Berdych. Tomas won all their encounters in 2008, which also happen to be the last two times they met. In Cincinnati, ironically, Berdych dismissed Gonzalez in the first round 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. And in Tokyo, he beat him in the quarters 6-0, 6-4.
