TOMAS BERDYCH JOINS STAR-STUDDED CAST FOR M'SIA OPEN
Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, ranked world number 18, became the latest high profile player to join a star-studded cast for the inaugural ATP 250 Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur from Sept 26 to Oct 4.
Berdych, a player of immense talent and power and has scored some memorable wins over some of the biggest names in world tennis like Wimbledon finalist and current world number one Roger Federer, Andy Roddick, Rafael Nadal, Fernando Gonzalez, Juan Martin Del Potro and Marcos Baghdatis.
Tournament organiser, IMG Senior Vice President and Head of Tennis for Asia Nick Freyer said during the recent Wimbledon Championships, Berdych reached the last 16 before bowing out to Roddick.
"I am very pleased to be able to welcome Tomas to Kuala Lumpur for the Malaysian Open and having someone of his ability and prowess in the draw is only going to add to the incredible strength of the field," said Freyer who is also the Tournament Director.
This year Berdych, 23, won his fifth career title in Munich, defeating Mikhail Youzhny in the final after coming back from 1-5 in the final set tiebreak to win 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7/5).
?This will be a new destination for me and I am looking forward to being in Kuala Lumpur and to be there for the first tournament,? Berdych said. ?I have done well in Asia before; I won Tokyo last year and I hope I can continue to play well in Asia. I enjoy it there and the fans are very nice.?
Other prominent players who have confirmed their participation are Nikolay Davydenko of Russia (8th), Fernando Verdasco of Spain (10th), Fernando Gonzalez of Chile (11th), Robin Soderling of Sweden (12th), Gael Monfils of France (13th), David Ferrer of Spain (19th) and, two times Grand Slam champion and former world number one Lleyton Hewitt of Australia.
