Player To Watch: Tomas Berdych


The Czech enters Rome on the back of a runner-up finish to Roger Federer at the Mutua Madrid Open, his third career ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final, and a semi-final showing at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters (l. to Djokovic). Berdych captured his seventh title earlier this season in Montpellier and is 26-7 on the year, having also reached the Australian Open quarter-finals and final four in Rotterdam. The 26 year old will face the winner of Lukasz Kubot and wild card Potito Starace in his opener.

Berdych beat Kubot in straight sets

 
 
 
Tomas Berdych made a comfortable transition from the blue clay of Madrid to the red clay of Rome beating Lukasz Kubot 6-4, 6-1 Wednesday to set a third-round meeting with Nicolas Almagro who beat Sam Querrey five times in a 7-5, 6-2. Berdych, who reached the Madrid final last week, broke serve four times in a 6-4, 6-1 win over Poland's Lukasz Kubot.
