HERO: Carl Hillis and sister Paige meets tennis star Tomas Berdych
at the AT World Tour Finals at the O2 Arena.
Cancer sufferer meets tennis star
RAYLEIGH boy Carl Hillis met his tennis hero last week.
Carl, 12, who suffers from Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, joined fellow Great Ormond Street Hospital patients at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals at the O2 arena last Wednesday.
Accompanied by sister Paige, 14, he watched the top men’s players face each other on the court. The pair then had exclusive behind-the-scenes access and met seventh-ranked Tomas Berdych, who won his match that day against Janko Tipsarevic.
Carl was diagnosed with cancer of the lymphatic system in 2002. He was successfully treated but his cancer unfortunately returned in 2008.
The second bout of treatment was much harsher and he spent time in intensive care. However, he is now doing well and attending secondary school.
The trip followed the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals Gala at Battersea Power Station, which raised more than £400,000 for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.
