Preview: Tomas Berdych vs Jarkko Nieminen
Fifth seed Tomas Berdych will need to improve on his first round performance at the SAP Open if he is to beat Jarkko Nieminen in San Jose.
Berdych looked on course for a straightforward victory over Wayne Odesnik but ended up being pushed deep into a third set before class told and Berdych scraped through 6-1, 6-7, 7-5.
Jarkko Nieminen was also guilty of squandering chances and fortunate to keep getting more before he secured a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over German wildcard Lars Poerschke.
Berdych is a bit of a nemesis for the Finn who has now lost to him three times. None of the last three have been particularly close, Berdych handing out a 6-3, 6-1 thrashing last time they played at the 2008 Rogers Cup.
