Berdych recovery puts Czechs ahead of Argentina

Tomas Berdych recovered to beat Argentina's Juan Monaco 6-4, 2-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 and give the Czech Republic a 1-0 lead in the Davis Cup quarter-final in Ostrava on Friday.

Berdych, the world number 20, took the first set from a nervous Monaco, who replaced the injured David Nalbandian in the Argentinian team.

Monaco, the world 62, then fought back in the next two sets as Berdych started to suffer a series of unforced errors and double faults.

Berdych took a toilet break to gather his thoughts and returned rejuvenated, building up his confidence with an improved first serve and beating Monaco easily in the last two sets.

"The beginning was not ideal, but that's tennis. It's three sets and the game can take a new turn any time," Berdych told Czech television.

"It was mainly about serving. I was bad on first serves and when I don't have the pressure, I struggle. But then it changed."

Del Potro draws Argentina level

 

Juan Martin Del Potro made short work of Ivo Minar to draw Argentina level at 1-1 with the Czech Republic in their Davis Cup quarter-final tie in Ostrava on Friday.

The world number five, who was looking to bounce back from his shock second-round exit at Wimbledon, recorded an emphatic 6-1 6-3 6-3 win to put the South Americans, runners-up in 2006 and 2008, back in the tie.
