Czech Tomas Berdych needed just 53 minutes to get through his first round match as he broke German Rainer Schuettler six times en route to the 6-1, 6-2 victory.

Berdych, who won his sole ATP Masters Series title in 2005 at Paris (d. Ljubicic), is making his first appearance since clinching the Tokyo title two weeks ago (d. del Potro).

The former Top 10 player next confronts Argentine David Nalbandian in the Madrid second round for the second straight year. Nalbandian won that match in a third-set tie-break before going on to clinch the title with successive wins over del Potro, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

Tomas Berdych and Nicolas Kiefer will meet last week's Stockholm champions and No. 5 seeds Jonas Bjorkman and Kevin Ullyett, who are tied No. 5 in the Stanford ATP Doubles Race, after the Czech-German duo defeated Frenchmen Gael Monfils and Gilles Simon 6-3, 6-2 in 59 minutes. Berdych and Kiefer, who are playing together at their fourth ATP tournament and for the first time in 12 months, converted five of 16 break point opportunities.

Defending Champion Nalbandian Beats Berdych

Defending champion David Nalbandian survived a minor scare before easing through to the third round of the Madrid Masters on Wednesday at the expense of Tomas Berdych.

Nalbandian, who beat Berdych and top-ranked trio Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer in winning this tournament last year, looked on course for a comfortable outing against the Czech as he cruised through the first set.

However, Berdych, having taken Nalbandian to three sets last year, again made the Argentinian seventh seed sweat after claiming the second set in a tie-break.

Nalbandian stepped up a gear in the final set though to secure a 6-2 6-7 (5/7) 6-1 victory in just under two hours, sealing the win with a powerful forehand down the line.

Nalbandian will now face the winner of the match between Jarkko Nieminen and Juan Martin Del Potro as he seeks to add the Madrid Masters title to the Stockholm Open crown he won last week.

In second round action, fifth seeds Jonas Bjorkman and Kevin Ullyett—who are tied No. 5 in the Stanford ATP Doubles Race—boosted their chances of qualifying for Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai after beating Tomas Berdych and Nicolas Kiefer 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 (Match TB) in 80 minutes. Last week, the Swedish-Zimbabwean team captured their first ATP title at Stockholm (d. Brunstrom-Ryderstedt) and Bjorkman recorded his 700th career doubles win—third overall in ATP history (behind Sherwood Stewart and Todd Woodbridge). Earlier this year, Bjorkman and Ullyett reached the Wimbledon final (l. to Nestor-Zimonjic).
