Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France yesterday won the Heineken Stars 2008 tennis tournament final beating Swede Robin Soderling by two sets to one. The final was played at Ho Chi Minh City's Seventh Military Zone Stadium. The Frenchman, ranked 20th in ATP rankings clinched the tiebreaker in the first set, only to have the Swede roar back with a 6-1 win in the second. As per tournament rules, the winner had to be decided in a tiebreaker with the winner first to win 10 points. Tsonga prevailed 10-4 to take the cash prize of US$40,000. Soderling nabbed a $20,000 prize, while semi-final losers Tomas Berdych and Nicolas Kiefer took $10,000 each. Earlier, semifinalist losers 24th-ranked Nicolas Kiefer and 34th-ranked Tomas Berdych were busy meeting fans and signing autographs as well as taking on players from the Vietnamese national team and HCMC's District 1 team. Berdych, who was ranked in the Top 10 for 11 weeks earlier this season but is currently No. 29 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, knocked out No. 74-ranked Nicolas Mahut of France 7-6(6), 6-3 in one hour and 44 minutes. It was the pair's first meeting since the 2004 Australian Open. The 23-year-old Berdych improved to 27-18 on the season, highlighted by a run to his seventh ATP final (l. to Robredo) in July. He has a 3-4 record in ATP finals, with his last title coming at Halle (d. Baghdatis) last year. Mahut dropped to 15-23 in 2008.
Third seed Tomas Berdych set up a semifinal against Novak Djokovic. "I'm very happy with my game today," said Berdych. "I knew that he was playing very good tennis having some good wins this week. I'm looking forward to the semifinals; it's always nice to be able to play a match at that stage of a tournament."
