Gerry Weber Open 2008 Halle, Germany official website:
Tomas Berdych succeeded Roger Federer as the 2007 GERRY WEBER OPEN champion
June 17, 2007 - Fourth-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych dropped just two points on his first serve in a 7-5, 6-4 win over eighth seed Marcos Baghdatis to win the Halle title, one year after finishing runner-up to Roger Federer. Berdych, 21, clinched his first title since winning ATP Masters Series Paris in late 2005. It was his third career title. Berdych won 35 of 37 first-serve points, including his first 14 first-serve points. Yet in the 10th game of the first set he had to stave off two set points on his own serve to level the match at 5-5. Berdych, who saved all three break points against him, improved to 26-13 on the year while Baghdatis slipped to 28-13. Baghdatis, who was celebrating his 22nd birthday, was appearing in his third final of the year, having won Zagreb and finished runner-up in Marseille. Tomas Berdych: "It's fantastic. It's the second year in the final so to finish the champion this time is great. "For me it's very special to win on grass. Two years ago I was saying I didn't like grass too much, so to be the champion after a tough tournament is very nice." What was the turning point?: "The end of the first set when I was two set points down and then I had one small chance to break him. That was the key to the match."

"I am pleased with my performance," Berdych said.
Third seed and defending champion Tomas Berdych enjoyed safe passage into the second round of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle after defeating 2001 champion Swede Thomas Johansson 6-3, 7-5 on Monday. World No. 12 Berdych fired nine aces and converted three of 11 break points to seal victory in 1 hr., 17 min., and avenge his loss to Johansson on grass at Nottingham in 2005. The 22-year-old, whose season highlight was a semifinal finish at ATP Masters Series Miami (l. to Nadal), is making his third appearance in Halle. He finished as runner-up to Roger Federer on his debut in 2006, before capturing the title last year, defeating Marcos Baghdatis in the final. World No. 69 Johansson, who has been ranked as highly as No. 7 (June 10, 2002), has an impressive record in Halle, winning the title in 2001 (d. Santoro), reaching the semifinals in 1998 (l. to Kafelnikov) and the quarterfinals in 2002 (l. to Carlsen). He slips to 10-14 for the season.
Tomas Berdych served nine aces and beat Sweden's Thomas Johansson 6-3, 7-5 Monday to move into the second round of the Gerry Weber Open. The 12th-ranked Czech's third break of Johansson's serve gave him a decisive 6-5 lead in the second set, and he finished the match in one hour 17 minutes at the grass-court event, a key tune-up for Wimbledon. Berdych took the crown last year with Roger Federer absent, following four straight years the Swiss had won the event en route to his Wimbledon titles. Two years ago, the Czech was beaten in the final by Federer.
In the battle of two former GERRY WEBER OPEN champions Tomas Berdych defeated Thomas Johansson 6-3, 7-5. Last year, Berdych benefited of Roger Federer´s withdrawal. If he wants to repeat his success this time out, he will not be able to avoid a showdown with the Swiss star. In the first round, an average performance was enough to hold off Johansson. The 33-year-old, who sensationally won the 2002 Australian Open, appears to be past his prime. 22-year-old Berdych entered the match as the favourite. He showed early what would later make the difference. While Johansson failed to convert the first break points at 2-2, Berdych broke his opponent´s serve one game later to easily take the first set. The match appeared to be in for a quick ending when Berdych broke the Swede again in the first game of the second set but Johansson bounced back, making good use of his strongest weapon, the double-handed backhand, and immediately gained the rebreak. After wasting a couple of set points at 3-3, Berdych showed his potential at 5-5 - a strong return, a few well-placed passing shots, a stop. He broke Johansson again and wrapped up the match, making it 7-5.
Tomas Berdych got his title defence at the Gerry Weber Open off to a successful start by comprehensively beating Thomas Johansson 6-3 7-5 in the opening round on Monday. The third-seeded Czech had little trouble keeping Johansson at bay on the grass at Halle, breaking him in the sixth game to win the first set 6-3. He broke his opponent's serve again in the first game of the second set but Johansson immediately returned the favour. The Czech then squandered three break points at 3-3 and again at 5-5, before the Swede sent a forehand long and gave Berdych the lead for good. Berdych finally wrapped up the match 7-5 to set up a second-round meeting with Robin Soderling.

Berdych finally wrapped up the match 7-5 to set up a second-round meeting with Robin Soderling. "I am pleased with my performance," Berdych said. "It is always difficult to start the grass court season. The next match will be against Soderling and that will be a fight. It will be very difficult." The 22-year-old reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon after winning in Halle last year although he is not looking ahead to the final and the possibility of claiming back-to-back triumphs. "I take it step-by-step and only think match-by-match," Berdych told PA Sport. "Right now I am happy I started the grass court season, which is very short, well. I will only focus on my next opponent." "Last year at Wimbledon I reached my first quarter-finals at a grand slam and that was great. If I could get close again that would be great." Berdych will play another Swede in the next round after Soderling defeated local player Philipp Petzschner 6-4 4-6 6-4.
June 9, 2008 - Czechs Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek ousted defending doubles champions and No. 3 seeds Simon Aspelin and Julian Knowle 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 in first round action, Monday at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle. Berdych and Stepanek, who are making their fifth main draw appearance as a duo, last partnered together against Belgium in Davis Cup action – a match they won in five sets. Berdych is the defending Halle singles champion and also won his singles opener, earlier Monday. The second year duo of Aspelin and Knowle falls to a 13-13 record for the season. The reigning US Open champions have yet to reach a final in 2008.
Order of Play - Wednesday, June 11, 2008 Centre Court at 12:00 noon Robin SODERLING (SWE) vs Tomas BERDYCH (CZE)
Defending GERRY WEBER OPEN champion Tomas Berdych crashed out of the tournament following a 6-2, 7-5 loss against Robin Soderling. Until today, Berdych boasted an impressive record at Halle. In 2006, it was not before the final that Roger Federer stopped his run, and in 2007, the Czech edged Marcos Baghdatis to win the crown. His title defence, however, ended early as Soderling displayed great serves, strong returns and further well-placed shots. Berdych won just nine points in Soderling´s ten service games. "He served extremely well," Berdych praised. "And my return did not work." Soderling impressed by maintaining his high level of play right until the end. It was almost scary to see him winning twelve straight points at the end of the first and early in the second set. After 30 minutes, he had taken a 6-2 lead and also got the second set off to a good start. As far as his own service was concerned, Berdych eventually got his act together and kept the match open until the 11th game. He won the final eight points to eliminate the defending champion. On his first match point, he got a lucky bounce off the net. Berdych reached the ball but could not fire it back. "It was a great match," the Swede said afterwards. "Tomas is a very good grass court player. He proved that last year. You have to play very well to beat him. I played two very good sets." Asked about his chances at the GERRY WEBER OPEN, he said: "Everything is possible – even though Roger is here." Back in 2005, he wasted three match points against the Swiss star in a close 7-6(5), 6-7(6), 4-6 loss. "I came quite close back then but it was not enough," he added. After his strong performance against Berdych, he will be among the favourite to challenge Federer´s grass court hegemony this time out.
